New licensing models for Jessa Studio – an initial outlook

Jessa Studio applications will remain proprietary software, with regular releases continuing to be made available free of charge. Nothing is changing for the time being: published applications may still be used as unchanged binary releases under the licence terms supplied with each project.

Companies and organisations may, however, have requirements that go beyond the normal use of a published application. These can include internal security reviews, external audits, compliance requirements or long-term continuity planning for software used in business operations.

The new licensing page therefore outlines several models that may be introduced in the future.

An Audit Source License could provide time-limited access to the source code of a specifically identified application version. This access would be restricted to agreed review purposes, such as an internal security assessment, certification work or an external audit. It would not permit publication, further development or the production use of independently compiled builds.

For selected projects, an Enterprise Source License may also become available at a later stage. It could provide permanent internal access to the source code, together with precisely defined rights to create internal builds, make operational modifications and improve long-term business continuity.

A Source Code Escrow arrangement may eventually offer an additional form of protection. Under such a model, the source code would be deposited with an independent party and released only if previously agreed contractual conditions were met.

These options are currently only in preparation. Paid licences cannot yet be ordered or purchased, and no prices or final contractual terms have been determined. For now, the new page is intended to provide transparency about what may become possible in the future – and to establish whether there is a genuine need for these models.
